who we are

Tortacos is a fast-casual Mexican restaurant in Montgomery County, MD that serves L.A.-style street food favorites from the Espana family's California life in the 80s and 90s.

We make sure our proteins are seasoned well, our salsas are made from scratch, and our tortillas & torta bread are locally sourced. Sure, we make food we like to eat, but we make sure it’s food we can share.

We want to make Tortacos, for all. For our crew, for our families, and for our communities.

our story

In 2011 the Espana family brought their love of the Los Angeles Mexican food scene to their adopted home, Maryland. With a hunger for L.A.-style street tacos that were scarce at the time, the family together opened their doors in Gaithersburg, MD. The lessons for the first-time restaurant owners were quick! The family poured their effort, savings, and all of their time into making the tiny shop work. They made it through with the help of many family members, friends, and networks in Montgomery County. They had little marketing, but a lot of love and trust in the food and the customers.

Fast forward thirteen years, include many menu expansions, open another location, and a get through a worldwide pandemic, and you get Tortacos growing strong at its current home in Germantown, MD. With John at the helm and with the support of family, friends, and an incredible crew, this restaurant hopes to keep serving the well-loved food that you all know. All while keeping its grill open to cooking up the best tacos (and tortas, sopes, burritos, bowls, chips, esquites…you get it) that it can.

community

We’re proud to have sponsored many, many fundraisers, events, swim meets, and donated dinners to our local students’ sports teams, theaters, and clubs. Some include: Seneca Valley High School, Northwest High School, Waters Landing Elementary, Germantown Elementary, Go Church, Ronald McNair Elementary, Roberto Clemente Middle School, Little Bennet Elementary.

Local businesses are an important part of our restaurant ecosystem. Our torta bread, and the tortillas we use are made locally; keeping it fresh helps give our food its flavor. We support the local businesses that make our uniforms, that send us technicians, print our materials, and bring us our ingredients. Without them, we wouldn’t run like we do.

It’s important to us that you can trust us to be your neighbor. We’re honored to have been the Saturday morning post-game eatery for our local sports teams, the spot you bring your friends to, and the simple take-out dinner for the family. We’ve catered your family events, attended your office lunches, and fed your guests at important moments. Keep letting us know what you need, and we’ll work to be that taqueria next door.
